She Wore Black Velvet

I was captivated by dark velvet’s allure in this Eastern-inspired Cheongsam dress I found at TaraStarlet.com. Admittedly, crushed velvet is a risk, especially when ordered online, sight-unseen. It was either going to be unexpectedly fabulous or terribly tacky. Fortunately, my go-to retro designer TaraStarlet did not let me down with this frock. I felt like Kim Basinger in her early 90’s prime, with Chris as Alec Baldwin in his svelter days.

The occasion was my official birthday on December 21 (I wrote about my earlier celebration with friends at a drag show brunch in San Francisco here) , and my parents treated Chris and me to dinner at the Top of the Hub in Boston. We snapped these pics in the lobby before heading up to the restaurant on the 52nd floor of the Prudential Building.

It was a cool and clear evening, and we enjoyed spectacular panoramic views of the city as we dined. As with most of the best big nights out, this one ended with karaoke. After dinner, Chris convinced my parents to continue the celebration at Elephant & Castle where we serenaded the crowd with increasingly wine soaked renditions of Lady Gaga, City High, Michael Jackson and Alicia Keys. Family, food, the perfect party dress and karaoke: what more can a girl ask for on her birthday?
Here are a few shots from dinner…
